Stop Playing Small!

Stop Playing Small!

“Our greatest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our greatest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves,’Who am I to be brilliant, talented, fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn’t serve the world. There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us, it’s in ALL of us. As we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” Nelson Mandela Recently, the world lost a great leader – Nelson Mandela. The quote above, given at his inaugural speech in 1994, has always been one of my favourites. His life reminds every one of us to STOP PLAYING SMALL and to live life at our full potential. Check out my latest blog post, Unleash Your Full Potential on the Breakthrough Coach website for more. Gratitude and the Dark Side

Gratitude and the Dark Side

Gratitude helps you to grow and expand; gratitude brings joy and laughter into your life and into the lives of all those around you. ~Eileen Caddy   Ever notice how the negative things in life try to steal all the press in your mind? We all experience setbacks, disappointments, frustration, anxiety, etc. None of us are immune to the dark side of life. After all, it is part of the human experience. Left unchecked, however, the dark side can leave us buckling under the weight of oppressive thoughts and emotions. Guarding our hearts and minds is crucial if we are to keep our “eye on the prize” and enjoy life thoroughly, no matter what it may throw our way. I am firmly convinced that cultivating the discipline of gratitude is a powerful way to keep our hearts strong, especially when the dark side of life is rearing its ugly head! I am a big fan of The Chronicles of Narnia. So are my children. In “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader,” King Caspian makes a powerful confession after reflecting on his personal battle with the dark side… I spent too long wanting what was taken from me and not what was given. Powerful. How much time has been lost stressing over what you don’t have rather than being grateful for what is right in front of you? Far too much… At least for me. Today is my 42nd birthday. And I find myself in a very different place… Maybe it’s the maturity that comes with age (although my kids might disagree), but I am more grateful now than I have ever been. As I spend some time reflecting, here are the things that I am most thankful for right now… My children. They are the pride of my life! I am blessed with the five smartest, coolest, funniest kids a man could ever want. If only they could all sing and dance, we could take this show on the road! My life partner. She gets me. She loves me. She makes me laugh. And she loves Star Trek and Star Wars as much as I do! What else could I say? Jasmine, you have made me the happiest man alive! (Oh, and you taught me how to cook! Awesome!) My extended family. They supported me through one of the toughest seasons of my life, and have always been there when I needed them. Thanks mom, Chantal, and Al! I am in your debt! My dad. It has been five years since we lost you, but your life lives on in us. You taught me so much! I carry you in my heart every day. It has been said that you can tell the size of the ship from the size of the wake it leaves in the water. You left a huge wake… My mentor. Jim, you taught me how to live again. At a time of my life where I had lost my way, you helped me find my way home. You inspire me in so many ways. From the bottom of my heart, thank you! God. For the opportunity to start again, for second chances, for the strength and courage You have given me… The list is endless!   I could go on… But blogs aren’t supposed...

Free yourself from your mind trap!

Free yourself from your mind trap!

Your mindset determines your reality. It’s that simple. Really! Several years ago now, I felt trapped. After many fulfilling years of service as a church planter/pastor, I found myself needing to make a change. I was no longer in my element, and I had lost my passion. I knew I needed to try something new. But I felt trapped. All my training and education had been to prepare me to lead a local church. The not-for-profit world was all I knew. It was time to go, but I was stuck. Having been in that world for so long, I couldn’t imagine myself doing anything else. I felt trapped with no way out! Thankfully, I had a life-changing conversation with a colleague of mine one day. He helped me to see things from a different perspective and to realize that all of the skills and experience I had learned in the world I knew well could be applied readily in a new environment. I remember that moment like it was yesterday. It’s like a light went on in my mind and my heart! It was in that moment that I realized that I wasn’t trapped at all. And that I hadn’t been all along! The only place I was stuck was in my own head! I had wrongfully come to adopt a mindset and a belief system that kept me from making important decisions and changes. The first all-important step in getting unstuck was to dismiss those limiting beliefs and adopt a new mindset of possibilities. Maybe you can relate to my story. Perhaps you find yourself feeling stuck in a dead-end job or in a relationship that is going nowhere. Perhaps you on your own business but somewhere along the way you stopped having fun. You’ve lost your passion and you feel trapped. What ever your personal story is, you’re not alone! All of us have been there. The good news is that you don’t have to stay in that place! There is a way out! As I type these words, I wish I could look you right in the eyes and with all the conviction and influence I can muster, communicate this to you: You are more than your current situation. You can reinvent yourself. There is more to you than meets the eye! To get moving again, you must challenge that limited thinking that is holding you back! If you change your mind, you can transform your reality! In future posts I will continue to elaborate on my story and share the lessons that I learned along the way. These principles have allowed me to blaze a new path for my life. Make sure to bookmark this post, or better yet subscribe to my blog to receive updates on this thread and more. In the meantime, check out “Seven Powerful Questions to Get You Unstuck!” Remember this: Feeling stuck or trapped is more a state of thinking and feeling than a state of being. If you’re going to change your situation and refocus your life, you’re going to have to start thinking differently about yourself. I would love to hear from you!┬áIf you have had a similar experience and have words of wisdom to share that might be helpful to others, please share it here. Let’s start...

Are you ready to launch?

Over the last 18+ months, I have met with hundreds of business owners to explore the challenges and obstacles they face every day. Without fail, the vast majority of them always express a genuine desire to have one of our coaches work with them to build the kind of company they have always envisioned. The challenge for them – especially the small businesses, start-ups, and solo professionals – is that they often lack the financial resources for one-on-one coaching. After hundreds of such conversations, I am very excited to announce the launch of my coaching company’s Group Coaching Program. For the first time, Breakthrough Coach will be offering a highly impactful AND cost-effective program that marries the leverage of a highly trained business coach with the synergy of like-minded professionals working toward a common goal.
